Valley Hi neighborhood to get $1 million healthy living grant
A neighborhood of Sacramento will be the recipient of an infusion of expertise and money to promote a healthy lifestyle.
Led by the Health Council of Education, Valley Hi neighborhood in south Sacramento will receive a grant of $ 1 million of Kaiser Permanente. The grant is part of Kaiser's three-year, $ 10 million Healthy Eating Active Living area (HEAL).
The zones are designed to make healthy food and exercise available in "bad" neighborhoods, according to Kaiser. When the Valley Hi community developed about 40 years ago, it flourished.However, with the development of Greenhaven and Pocket areas, property values fell.
Sponsors said HEAL make healthy choices available to Valley Hi residents will prevent diabetes and hypertension, diseases related to obesity. A press release said that Kaiser in California, half of all adults, one of nine children and one in three adolescents are obese or overweight.
"As we address obesity, especially childhood obesity, it is imperative to make changes at the local level - where people live, work and play - to make it easier for people to eat more healthily and move more in everyday life, "said Debra Oto-Kent, Executive Director of the Board of Education of health.
Valley Hi area HEAL will bring together government agencies, schools, employers, businesses, faith-based organizations, providers of health care and others. In addition to the Valley Hi, communities in Modesto, San Francisco, Madera, Concord, Richmond and Santa Rosa received $ 1 million.
A neighborhood can affect a person's weight, according to Kaiser. If stores do not stock fruits and vegetables and if the streets are not safe for walking, the neighborhood may affect the likelihood of obesity.
Kaiser said low-income communities, where areas are concentrated HEAL, tend to have some of the highest rates of obesity.
Yvette Radford, Kaiser vice president of regional business community said HEAL zones "are an extension of work in our medical centers, and our commitment to help create healthy individuals and healthy communities.
